Windows 95/98: Setting up Dial-Up Networking

(without using the Account Set-up Wizard)

Step 1

Make sure the client for Microsoft Networks, the dial-up adapter and TCP/IP protocol are installed.

1. Click Start, select Settings, select Control Panel.

 

2. Double-click the Network icon.

 

3. Verify that Client for Microsoft Networks is listed (Fig 3.2).
If it is, go to step 6. If it isn't, click Add.

 

4. Double click Client. (Fig 4.2)

 

5. Select Microsoft, select Client for Microsoft Networks, select OK.
You may be prompted for your Windows CD-ROM. Provide the disk and click OK.

 

6. Verify the Dial-Up Adapter is present (Fig 3.3).
If it is, Go to Step 9. If it isn't, clickAdd.

 

7. Double-click Adapter. (Fig 4.3)

 

8. Scroll down the list and select Microsoft.

Choose Dial-Up Adapter and click OK.
You may be prompted for your Windows CD-ROM.

 

9. Verify the TCP/IP Protocol is present (Fig 3.4). If it is, go to Step 12.

If it isn't, click Add.

 

Select TCP/IP Protocol, then click Properties.

In the next pop-up box, select the tab DNS Configuration and confirm Disable DNS is marked.

Next select the tab for WINS Configuration and click Disable WINS Resolution

10. Double-click Protocol (Fig 4.4).

 

11. Select Microsoft, choose TCP/IP and click OK.

 

12. Click OK until you are asked to restart the system.

After you restart, proceed to the next step.
