Web Browser Error Messages

Web browser errors often have more to do with the site you are trying to access than to problems with your browser itself.

The following table lists error messages you might encounter and what you can do to fix them.

Error What It Means The Fix
400 Bad RequestThe server cannot find the URL you requested. Check your spelling and be sure to use the proper case. Try simplifying the address to see if the domain is correct
410 Unauthorized The password you entered is invalid. Check the password and try again. Be sure you don't have the CAPS LOCK key on.
404 Not Found This result code is sent from web server software to your browser. It means the browser found the host computer, but cannot find the specific page you requested. Double check that you typed the URL exactly as shown, including capital letters. If the URL is correct, it is also possible the web page may have been deleted, renamed or moved. Back up one level to see if you can find an index for the host site.
502 Network Connection Refused The web site is too busy to handle the number of people trying to access it. Try connecting to the site again several times or wait until later.
503 Service Unavailable The server is too busy to handle your request. Try again. Busy sites, such as breaking news or elections, may be overloaded during peak times. You may want to seek an alternative site.
Bad File RequestThere are errors in the HTML or coding of the page you requested. This error is most often encountered with interactive forms. Send an email to the site webmaster to make her aware of the problem with the form. Double check your browser to make sure it is capable of handling forms.
Connection refused by Host The Web site you are attempting to access requires special permission to view. Double check the spelling of your log in name and password or seek the proper access permission.
DNS Lookup FailedThe URL you typed cannot be translated into a valid IP address. First double check your spelling of the URL and try the site again. You may have an incorrect URL syntax, such as a misplaced "dot" or back slash. If the error persists, it is possible the DNS server is busy. Or you may have the DNS server configured wrong in your Network Settings.
HTTP Server at Compress "xxx".com:8080 Replies:HTTP/1.0 500 or Error From ProxyThis indicates a problem with the proxy server. The proxy server is down or busy and cannot process your request. Try again in a few minutes. If the error persists, contact the administrator of the proxy server.
503 Gateway TimeoutThe network connection was timed out when attempting to access the gateway. There may be problems with the gateway connecting your ISP to the rest of the Internet.
Host UnknownThe domain name you requested is not in the DNS database.Double-check your spelling of the URL. If you're guessing at a domain, try an alternative ending, such as .com, .edu, .net, .gov or others.
File contains no dataYour browser located the web page, but there is nothing in the file. Check the spelling of the URL. If the error persists, try adding Port 80 to the URL immediately after the domain name, but before the first directory slash. (example: http://www.somesite.com:80) Contact the webmaster of the site if you still encounter the error.
Helper Application Not FoundThe file you are trying to access or download needs a helper application.Check the web site to find out what application is needed. You may need to download the helper application, too. If that helper application is already on your system, check the helper application preferences in your browser to make sure it has the correct file name and path name pointing to the helper application.
