Using WS_FTP


This is a brief guide to using WS_FTP. To learn more about the program, we recommend you read the program help file that comes with WS_FTP.

  • Install the software on your computer and open the application.
  • Fill in the dialog box that appears with the following information. (You type in the red words)
    Profile name: homepage.dycon.com
    Host name: homepage.dycon.com
    Host type: auto detect
    User ID:type in your username
    Password: type in the password you use to connect with Dynamic Internet
    Check the Save Pwd box
    Click OK
  • The WS_FTP Window

  • Once you have established a connection, you will see a window with two sections.



    The left side references files on your local computer. The right side references the remote computer.

  • Selecting a file to transfer. On the right side, select the files for your web page by clicking on the file name in the list, then click on the arrow (in the middle of the window) which points to the computer to be transferred to.

  • Changing Directories. You will probably need change directories to locate the files for your web page. To change directories, select the narrow box at the top of the right section, then click the ChgDir button below it. In the dialog box that appears, type in the location of your desired file.

  • Shortcut: If you don't know the path name off the top of your head, simply type in C:\ into the ChgDir dialog box. When the list of directories on your C-drive appear, double click on the directory where your web page is located. This action adds that directory name to the box at the top. Then double click on the file where your web pages are located.

  • Removing Files. You can remove or rename a file or directory by clicking once on the file to be removed (this highlights the selected file name) and then using the Rename or Delete button.

  • Quick Editing. It's easy to make quick changes or updates to files in WS_FTP. Select the desired file in the left window by clicking on its name, then use the View button. The file is opened and you can edit as needed. Be sure to save your changes before closing the file. Close the file, select the file and click the arrow pointing to the remote system.

  • Log File. The log file appears at the bottom on the window. This shows information about your FTP session activities and file transfers.

  • Exit. To log out, click on the Close button. To close the program, click Exit.
