FTP Error Messages

Just as when you use the World Wide Web, when you use FTP, you are connecting to a server. You are simply using a different protocol for the connection.

The following table lists error messages you might encounter with FTP and what you can do to fix them.



Error What It Means The Fix
Invalid Host
or
Unable to Resolve Host Name
The FTP program cannot find the address you requested. Be sure you typed the correct FTP server name in the server name field.
The FTP program connects to the remote server, then suddenly stops responding.The software may be waiting for a response or it may not be properly configured.First double check the configuration of your FTP program and that you have entered the correct server connection in your FTP program. If the delay goes on too long, try adding a dash (-) before your password and reconnect. This turns off the site's informational messages, which may be conflicting with your FTP program.
Too many consecutive transmit errors.In most cases, noise on your telephone line causes this problem. Aside from experiencing noise on the telephone line, you may have an incorrect modem initialization string. Check hardware and software settings, disconnect, then try to reconnect.
